Section 4:
Thinking of Time
Tadao Ando regards his work as contextualist and emphasizes that his existence is only a part of the relationship between the history of architecture. This attitude is most evident in his work on the theme of revitalization of old buildings. Here, Ando pays respect to the time that has been engraved on the existing building and expends a great deal of energy in preserving it as a memory, while at the same tim eattempting to create a completely new contemporary space within it. lt is hoped that the dialogue between the old and the new evoked therein will have the power to connect time from the past to the future. The two sets of works introduced here are at the forefront of ANDO's architectural genealogy brought by the "dialogue with history"!
“This building has been floating on the water since the 15th century, and my intention is to see it float into the future; it is a very old building and it was very difficult to study its history so as to preserve its original structure and innovate toward the future."

"In Japan, the circle represents both ‘emptiness’ and the universe. As light and footsteps revolve within the space, the circular form invites each visitor to reflect on their place in an uncertain world."

“If I can create some space that people haven't experienced before…and if it stays with them…that's the kind of structure I seek to create.”
